Is the party lifestyle to blame for so many uni students getting poor quality sleep?

Up to 60% of all students in higher education suffer from poor sleep quality, and 7.7% meet all criteria of an insomnia diagnosis. Sleep problems have a massive impact on the students’ daily life, and being underslept negatively impacts any students educational performance.

Students experience several important developments when starting at university. They have to cope with “leaving home, increased independence, changes in peer groups, new social situations, maintenance of academic responsibilities and increased access to alcohol or drugs”

These challenges and special circumstances faced by university students are associated with sleep disturbances.

Living with lack of quality sleep night after night can lead to negative emotions including depression, anxiety and posttraumatic stress disorder.

It's important for university students to learn how to live in balance especially when life is filled with a varied and emotionally stimulated schedule of new social situations, new and diverse people, combined with the knowledge intake of higher education; it's a wonder how any uni student copes with the challenges of university life.

This is why uni students need help with how to enjoy quality sleep in challenging circumstances.
